Cat Shelf
We found a cat on the side of the road. He had no shelf. Naturally, I had to make one.
Inspiration
I started by gathering some inspiration shots - noting these offset shelves in the La Guardia airport, and another in a local furtniture store.
Sketching the shelf in the space
Next I experimented with the dimensions. Once I landed on an overall shape, I moved the design to CAD where I could more easily model the joints and port-hole rings.
Construction — wood + 3D printed ring inserts
Making the shelf structure was pretty simple. Given the shelf will be upholstered, I decided to create some port-hole covers that would hide the upholstery seams. I designed these in CAD, and 3D Printed them. They’re my favorite part of the design.
Wrapped in upholstery (inner felt liner and then a layer of colored fabric), mounted on the wall, and promptly modeled by the cat.
